The Plum Agency has been running a competition on Instagram. They're asking artists to produce a cover and two black and white spreads based on either Jason and The Golden Fleece or King Midas' Golden Touch. I opted for Jason and I've really been enjoying trying different styles and looks. This was my first idea: I really liked it but Jason seemed lost and I'd basically left no room for Titles and other important stuff like that. I then tried something different. Putting Jason front and centre, along with Medea who basically is the only reason he succeeds with his quest. Again I'd left not much room for titles and I hated how the background came out. My next effort was much more action focused - going for a Last Kids On Earth vibe: I still wasn't happy. So I tried a different approach for Jason and felt a pull back to the dragon too. I mean - who doesn't like dragons? I loved how this looked - especially Jason. Tough but fun. I also liked the extra stuff like skulls and broken shields. But I thought this would actually work as a spread as part of the story. I'm super happy with the way this came out - especially the clarity. The fleece stands out as does Jason and that massive dragon. So I had to have another go at that cover. I love this. Jason is front and centre. Titles pop. There's a real sense of a hero on a quest and still there's that dragon lurking in the background. And best of all, I get real Asterix vibes from it.
