The Dragon Racers

Picture
I was having lunch with two of my writer friends, Sebastien De Castell and Ben Galley, when the conversation turned to the F1 movie with Brad Pitt. Someone — I think it was Sebastien — said, "Wouldn't it be cool to do something similar with dragons?"

And yes. Yes, it would.

Creatures of mass destruction racing each other for some prize of great importance. Their riders holding on for dear life while attempting some crazy manoeuvre. Maybe the odd fireball thrown in for good measure and nasty skullduggery.

It got me thinking, and that got me drawing.

I liked the idea of doing a series of Dragon Racer portraits — like F1 driver portraits, each one similar but distinct. Small, agile dragons rather than big lumbering beasts. Riders who are light on their feet and lighter still in the saddle. No weapons except knives to cut themselves loose if they need to. And flags showing their team colours.

I love how they've come out — the attitude they have, the life in them. No idea how many more I'll do.

Of course, now I can't stop asking questions. What are their names? What are their stories? What are they racing for — personal glory, or something more important?
